International Front
Runners
International
Front Runners is an affiliation of LGBT run/walk communities
that have organized in many larger cities around the world. The
first Frontrunner group formed in San Francisco in 1974.
There are currently about a hundred Frontrunner communities
and they are as diverse as where they are situated. Some of them
have hundreds of members. Some start-ups have only a few. Many
include walkers, not just runners, and at least one has many
more walkers than runners. Some elect officers, have bylaws and
a memberships dues structure. Many don't.
There is a popular misconception that to participate in Frontrunners,
you have to be a "serious" runner. This is not the
case. Although some groups are more competitive, and competition
among members has motivated some to achieve goals they never
thought possible, by far it is the camaraderie that keeps Frontrunners
(both groups and individuals) going.
It is the spirit of inclusion and participation that is important. Milwaukee Gamma
Milwaukee
Gamma has been around for over 20 years bringing a
wide variety of social and sporting events to the Milwaukee
LGBT community. A great group of folks who keep re-inventing
themselves to meet the needs of their members. Membership
typically averages 150 - 200 people.
And Special Thanks To . . .
The founders of FrontRunners Milwaukee owe a debt of gratitude
to several other Frontrunner clubs who provided information
and timely suggestions. In
particular, Frontrunners/Frontwalkers
Chicago and Shoreline
Frontrunners of Long Beach, CA. And an extra helping
of gratitude to Brad Miyasato of Shoreline Frontrunners.
